Origin and History

The Selkirk Rex originated in Montana, USA, in 1987, from a litter of a rescued cat. One of the kittens displayed a unique curly coat, a result of a spontaneous genetic mutation. This kitten, named Miss DePesto after her persistent and affectionate nature, was bred to a Persian, birthing the foundation of the Selkirk Rex breed. The breed was named after the Selkirk Mountains in Wyoming, making it the only cat breed named after a mountain range. It was recognized by major cat fancier associations in the following years and has since gained popularity worldwide.

Physical Characteristics

The Selkirk Rex is distinguished by its plush, curly coat, which can be either long or short and comes in all colors and patterns. The breed has a solid, muscular body with a round head, large rounded eyes, and a broad nose, giving it a sweet, expressive face. Its curls are not limited to its coat; the whiskers and eyebrows are often curly as well. The density and plushness of the coat give the Selkirk Rex a teddy bear-like appearance, further enhanced by its substantial bone structure.

Personality and Temperament

Selkirk Rex cats are known for their relaxed, patient, and affectionate demeanor. They are social and enjoy being part of family activities, often seeking out attention and affection from their owners. Despite their laid-back nature, they are playful and enjoy interactive toys and games that engage their hunting instincts. Selkirk Rexes are gentle and get along well with children and other pets, making them excellent family companions.

Care and Health

The unique coat of the Selkirk Rex requires regular grooming to prevent matting and to maintain its curly appearance. Brushing a few times a week and occasional baths are recommended, especially for long-haired varieties. Like all breeds, they should receive regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, and plenty of exercises to maintain their health and well-being. They are generally healthy, but, as with any breed, may be predisposed to certain genetic conditions.

Living with a Selkirk Rex

Living with a Selkirk Rex can be a joyous experience, as they bring both beauty and a gentle, loving presence into the home. Their sociable nature means they thrive in environments where they can interact with their human family or other pets. Providing them with a variety of toys and activities can help keep them entertained and stimulated. For those looking for a unique, affectionate, and engaging cat, the Selkirk Rex is a perfect choice, offering the best of both worlds with its distinctive looks and sweet disposition.
