Nebelung

Origin and History

The Nebelung breed originated in the United States in the 1980s, with the first kittens born to a black domestic shorthair named Terri and a blue domestic shorthair named Elsa. These kittens, Siegfried and Brunhilde, exhibited the distinctive long, blue coats and elegant physique that would become the hallmark of the Nebelung breed. Cora Cobb, the owner of Siegfried and Brunhilde, was instrumental in establishing the breed, working with geneticists and the International Cat Association (TICA) to ensure its recognition. The breed is considered to be the long-haired variety of the Russian Blue, sharing many physical and personality traits.

Physical Characteristics

Nebelungs are medium-sized cats with long, slender bodies and fine boning, giving them an elegant and graceful appearance. Their most distinguishing feature is their luxurious blue-grey coat, which is medium to long in length, soft, and double-layered, providing a beautiful silvery sheen. Their almond-shaped eyes are a deep, vivid green, further enhancing their mystical allure. The breed’s overall appearance is one of refined beauty and sophistication.

Personality and Temperament

Nebelungs are known for their gentle, quiet, and somewhat shy nature. They form strong bonds with their families and often show affection to those they trust, preferring a serene and stable environment. Despite their reserved demeanor, they are playful and curious, enjoying interactive toys and activities that stimulate their minds. Care and Health

The Nebelung’s long coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting and to keep it looking its best. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient to maintain their coat’s health and shine. They are generally a healthy breed, with no specific genetic health issues noted.
