Of very recent appearance, the American curl cat developed in California in the 80’s, because it was in 1981 when a couple of breeders found a kitten with curled ears and decided to adopt it. In the first litter they had, two other specimens with these characteristic ears appeared, one of them with short hair and the other with long hair.

This new breed and its particular ears created a sensation and many were the breeders and amateurs interested in obtaining specimens of the American curl.

Characteristics of the American curl cat

Cats of the American curl breed are medium in size, weighing between 3 and 5 kilograms, being somewhat smaller in females than in males, the height at the withers is between 45 and 50 in males and 40 and 45 in females. His body is long and quite muscular, with rectangular silhouettes. The head of these cats has a wedge shape, being longer than wide and with a rounded snout with a firm chin. Their eyes are large and rounded, with a color that is usually yellow or green, although depending on the pattern of the coat, others such as blue can be observed.

And so we come to the most characteristic and distinctive feature of the Merican curl cats: their ears. They look curved, with a more or less pronounced arc that can be between 90 and 180 degrees. This curvature will not be final until the animal reaches 5 months of age.

The breed’s coat can be of various lengths, although in all it is fine and glossy. We find the long-haired curl cat and the short-haired curl cat, however, both share very varied patterns and colors, since all are accepted except chocolate or cinnamon, including all possible shades of these.

Cats of this breed are very affectionate and calm. They like coexistence with both humans and other animals, so it is perfect if we have other pets. Of course, they must always be properly socialized. It is also ideal in the case of families with children, since they are funny cats but at the same time patient and are not nervous. We can prepare shared games or let the children invent them, so that both will enjoy both before and during those moments of play. They adapt easily to various environments, both to flats or houses with plots or houses with gardens. At the same time they are intelligent and quite curious, showing interest in new and unknown situations.
